Strengthening Alliances: Argentina and the United States Intensify Their Military Cooperation
Del 10 al 13 de marzo se realizaron las primeras reuniones de coordinación entre el Comando Conjunto de Operaciones Especiales de Argentina y el Comando Sur de Operaciones Especiales de Estados Unidos. De esto modo, se mantuvieron las primeras conversaciones sobre Fuerzas de Operaciones Especiales a nivel bilateral. A través de esta iniciativa se busca reforzar la preparación militar, la defensa y la seguridad regional, promoviendo el entrenamiento conjunto, el intercambio de expertos y la implementación de prácticas operacionales compartidas.
From March 10 to 13, the first coordination meetings were held between the Joint Special Operations Command of Argentina and the Special Operations Command South of the United States. In this manner, the first bilateral talks on Special Operations Forces took place. This initiative seeks to reinforce military readiness, defense, and regional security by promoting joint training, expert exchanges, and the implementation of shared operational practices.
Ejercicios Recientes y Cooperación Bilateral
En el marco de esta cooperación, en mayo de 2024, la Armada Argentina llevó a cabo el ejercicio "Gringo-Gaucho II" junto con la Armada de los Estados Unidos en aguas del Atlántico Sur. Esta maniobra incluyó la participación del portaaviones nuclear USS George Washington y tuvo como objetivo incrementar el nivel de adiestramiento a partir de operaciones combinadas, de aire-superficie, de visita, registro y captura, ejercicios de comando - control y técnicas y tácticas navales. A su vez se buscó mejorar la interoperabilidad entre ambas Armadas fortaleciendo el entendimiento mutuo.
El primer “Gringo-Gaucho” se realizó en 1990, con el paso del portaaviones USS “Abraham Lincoln”, y se repitió en 1991 con el portaaviones “Kitty Hawk”, en 1993 con el “Constellation”, en 2004 con el “Ronald Reagan”, en 2008 con el “George Washington” y en 2010 con el portaaviones USS “Carl Vinson”; este último se realizó por primera vez con el nombre “Gringo-Gaucho”.
Por otro lado, en agosto de 2024, efectivos argentinos participaron en el ejercicio multinacional "Panamax 2024" en territorio estadounidense. El ejercicio Panamax 2024 es un ejercicio militar multinacional conjunto y combinado centrado en la defensa del Canal de Panamá y sus alrededores. Se trata de una iniciativa de colaboración entre Estados Unidos, Panamá y otros países de América Latina y el Caribe, con el propósito de proteger esta vital vía de navegación de amenazas potenciales.
En esta edición del ejercicio, el Combined Force Air Component Commander (CFACC) Comandante del Componente Conjunto Combinado de Fuerzas Aéreas fue el brigadier Enrique Fabián Capellino. Este cargo no había sido ocupado nunca en la historia de los Ejercicios internacionales por parte de un oficial superior argentino de la FAA. El Ejercicio Multinacional Panamax 2024 marcó un hito para la Fuerza Aérea Argentina, que no solo demostró su capacidad para liderar operaciones aéreas combinadas, sino que también fortaleció su preparación para futuros desafíos en la defensa del espacio aéreo.
Importancia del Memorándum de Cooperación
La firma del memorándum refuerza la cooperación militar entre Argentina y Estados Unidos, permitiendo el acceso a capacitaciones especializadas, el intercambio de conocimientos y el desarrollo de estrategias conjuntas para enfrentar desafíos en el ámbito de la seguridad y la defensa.
Este tipo de ejercicios también favorece la modernización de las Fuerzas Armadas argentinas, brindando oportunidades para el uso de tecnologías avanzadas y nuevas tácticas operativas. Asimismo, fortalece la posición de Argentina dentro del marco de cooperación internacional en materia de defensa.
Se espera que, en los próximos meses, continúen realizándose ejercicios conjuntos entre ambas naciones, ampliando el alcance de las operaciones combinadas en distintos escenarios. Estas iniciativas no solo buscan reforzar la seguridad regional, sino también estrechar los lazos diplomáticos y militares entre Argentina y Estados Unidos, marcando un nuevo capítulo en la relación bilateral en materia de defensa.
Recent Exercises and Bilateral Cooperation
Within the framework of this cooperation, in May 2024, the Argentine Navy carried out the "Gringo-Gaucho II" exercise alongside the United States Navy in South Atlantic waters. This maneuver included the participation of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington and aimed to increase the level of readiness through combined operations, air-to-surface maneuvers, visit, board, search, and seizure operations, command-and-control exercises, and naval techniques and tactics. At the same time, it sought to improve interoperability between both Navies while strengthening mutual understanding.
The first “Gringo-Gaucho” took place in 1990 with the transit of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, and was repeated in 1991 with the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, in 1993 with the Constellation, in 2004 with the Ronald Reagan, in 2008 with the George Washington, and in 2010 with the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson; the latter was carried out for the first time under the name “Gringo-Gaucho.”
On the other hand, in August 2024, Argentine personnel participated in the multinational exercise "Panamax 2024" on United States territory. The Panamax 2024 exercise is a joint and combined multinational military exercise focused on the defense of the Panama Canal and its surroundings. It is a collaborative initiative between the United States, Panama, and other Latin American and Caribbean nations with the purpose of protecting this vital shipping route from potential threats.
In this edition of the exercise, the Combined Force Air Component Commander (CFACC) was Brigadier Enrique Fabián Capellino. This position had never before been held in the history of these international exercises by a senior officer from the Argentine Air Force. The Multinational Exercise Panamax 2024 marked a milestone for the Argentine Air Force, which not only demonstrated its capability to lead combined air operations but also strengthened its readiness for future challenges in airspace defense.
Importance of the Memorandum of Cooperation
The signing of the memorandum reinforces military cooperation between Argentina and the United States, allowing access to specialized training, knowledge sharing, and the development of joint strategies to face security and defense challenges.
